I absolutely love your writing. I miss seeing you on MSNBC but have gained a deeper appreciation for your prose. Not just insightful, but your style and personality infuses every sentence. Glad to be aboard for the adventure!

On Substack Joy can write freely with deep knowledge and emotion. I always learn something new here. Today is no exception.

A beautiful obituary. I always learn many things when I read Joy Reid!

I realized that this pope was a caring person when, during the Covid quarantines, I turned on the TV and saw him doing a televised blessing for anybody who might be watching from home. This was while Donald Trump was saying that Covid was a hoax.

Very well written and helpful in understanding the great leader Pope Francis as a missionary of compassion and inclusive care of All others, through his positions in the Catholic Church. We will miss him, and what he stood for, whether we are Catholic or not.

Joy, I am not religious, but I have admired this Pope deeply for his humanity and true love of others.

I also fear what will happen to the church...there have always been unfortunate ties to corruption and the Oligarchy undermining the outreach to those in need in favor of enrichment. A farther right leaning choice for Pope will be horrific.

Joy!!! You absolutely appeal to my heart and mind in this article. I love all religions but I believe that my relationship is a Spiritual Connection with a power greater than myself. My religion is Nondenominational United Methodist. I was married to a Catholic once and enjoyed the lifestyle. Today, I am being obedient to the calling of God as a Spiritual Politician. Checkin with me so we can have a conversation.

As a sometimes practicing Catholic, I couldn't help but draw the parallet between the Pope dying and seeing hell as in idv before he arrives in paradise just as Jesus did. Our fath faith says He descended into hell (jdv) before he ascended into heaven. To have seen Satan before he died was the most Christ-like action he could have taken.

Thanks for such a well written post. You are one of the most proficient writers and researchers I read. You posts sound just as you did on tv. Few writers write in such a way that it is and conversation, but such a scholarly essay. If you do all your own research kudos, but your writing is amazing.

I passed this on to best friends. You are interesting - were interesting, too, on weak-kneed msmbc. It must have felt destabilizing to be so summarily dismissed but your tongue has been set free.

Your beneficial nature is a gift to me.

May we all rise and stay risen when this tribulation is past.

Pope Francis held up a mirror (letter to the U.S. Bishops) in which the anti-Christian Right leadership can see its moral depravity, a rude awokening for those claiming to follow Jesus, while distorting or ignoring the Gospel! What guidance is more simple than "I was a stranger and you took me in; I was hungry and you fed me; I was in prison, and you visited me..."?

When we encounter reality, we can wisely choose to change our mind, or foolishly try to change reality. I am eager to see which of the "conservative" prelates change their minds and which ones try to change reality (i.e., ignoring Pope Francis's letter).

What an outstanding piece on a truly holy man. Jorge Mario Bergoglio priest, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Pope Francis was a quiet scholar but mostly a follower of Jesus' doctrine as a devout Jesuit. Compassionate and vocal I will miss him immensely. Thank you Joy.

I look forward to every one of your posts. Thank you.

The fact that Christian nationalism is feeding the Trump regime makes the death of a true Christian that much more tragic. True Christians following the words and actions of Chtist have become a rarity in organized religion.

One more thing - again as a Catholic I see the church paralleling politics and would expect the most conservative to be Pope. I already see the conservative backlash against Vatican II when I do attend Mass. Women covering their heads, like this is sign of how devote they are. I also see them kneeling on the cold stone floors while in the pews and receiving communion. If you have to do these things to show how holy you are, neither God nor the fellow Catholics are impressed. Perhaps they should go out into the desert and fast and do self-flagellation. This way we are not subjected to the faux holiness show.

No these "holy" people denounce women and abortion, but I have yet to hear any so-called leader condemn these false charges of terrorists that get them sent to El Salvador.

Which brings me to another point. If the guards at CECOT in El Salvador are so mean and cruel why do they need to wear masks. If they are indeed overseeing the worst criminals why cover their faces.Even the Nazis didn't hide.
