I was shocked to learn that people think the Irish Potato Famine is a myth and didn't happen. The Potato famine did exist. It's not a myth. The Irish were dependent upon the potato for food because it was inexpensive, easy to grow and plentiful for people of limited means. Most of their money went towards rent. They didn't own their own land and their crops were often the sole source of income. When blight struck the crops and spread between 1845 to 1852 people literally starved. The blight had a similar effect to the drought during the Dust Bowl period in America.
