Keep pushing! Cornyn and Tillis could end the Blanche nomination
Thom Tillis and John Cornyn have nothing to lose by voting "no" on Todd Blanche
A funny thing happens when you stab your friends in the back too many times: eventually, they start tending to their own wounds and telling you to fuck off.
Donald Trump chose his crimey friend Ken Paxton over forever Senator John Cornyn in the Texas primary, meaning Cornyn is officially a retiree starting in January. Tillis is retiring too, rather than seeking re-election, after breaking with Trump over the Big Ugly Bill, which Tillis opposed due to its $800 billion in savage cuts to Medicaid, which many in his state — like just about every red state — rely on. And he made the announcement likely knowing that he would leave a competitive race in his wake that a Democratic former governor of the state could win.
Well now, the two free agents are also free to vote their consciences, and it appears that at least for now, they may be in the process of clawing back their legacies.
The issue? Todd Blanche’s nomination to be our new attorney general. Trump needs every Republican on the Senate Judiciary committee to vote him through. And Tillis happens to be the guy who subjected Blanche to some of the most withering interrogation during his confirmation hearings, over the zombie January 6 / 1776 slush fund to pay reparations to January 6 insurrectionists, including violent felons and child rapists — a fund Tillis, Cornyn and any Republican and Democrat with good sense, opposes.
Ditto Cornyn, who is also a “no” on the Blanche elevation at this point, due to the continued existence of even a possibility that the slush fund will come back from the dead.
Just bask in the chill of this epic shade from the lame duck from Houston, who also opposes the “never audit Trump or his family” provisions in the Epstein-style sweetheart deal Trump’s former criminal attorney negotiated for his client the president to “settle” his $10 billion lawsuit against his own IRS:
“Well, you know, the president has a unique way of negotiating,” Cornyn told reporters Thursday, after a slated business meeting to advance Blanche’s nomination was postponed.
“I mean, he may think that he’s got us where he wants us. But the fact is, there’s no guarantee who the senators are going to be that will replace Sen. Tillis and myself, and he may have a weaker hand next year than he does now, and it’s unfortunate because we tried not to escalate this fight,” he said, adding that the move also means Trump wants to revive the fund at some point later on.
Meow.
Well the threats have been heard loud and clear at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue; to the point that Trump is apparently considering pulling Blanche’s nomination altogether; to which Cornyn had a second helping of “fuck you” for the orange menace:
President Donald Trump on Thursday said he is open to “temporarily withdrawing” Todd Blanche’s nomination for U.S. attorney general until after two Republican holdouts, Sens. John Cornyn and Thom Tillis, leave office next year.
Trump floated that possibility on Truth Social after excoriating the GOP senators over their continued refusal to back Blanche, the current acting AG, due to lingering concerns about the Department of Justice’s controversial settlement of the president’s lawsuit against his own IRS.
Cornyn quickly replied on X that Trump “is mistaken if he believes concerns about the provisions in his tax lawsuit settlement are limited to me and Senator Tillis.”
Jeepers…

For his part, Tillis sees the fund as a campaign liability for his colleagues, something Trump may fail to appreciate if he seeks to keep the fund alive.
“The main thing is the 1776 fund needs to go away, or they’re going to hang this yoke around our candidates’ necks, and rightly so, because somebody — I believe the only logical conclusion I can draw from this setback is that, in fact, there is somebody who wants to enable it at the right time. That’s unacceptable,” Tillis told reporters.
“It makes no sense to me. This is not popular. The president’s not winning on this issue. It is killing some of our candidates because they can’t explain it,” he added later.
I’ve heard enough. It’s time to lean in.
Look, no one has ever gone broke betting against Republicans maintaining their courage or convictions, so the good money is on these two party men folding like cheap suits and voting for Blanche in exchange for paper promises that the 1776 will go away long enough for them to pretend it didn’t happen on their watch. But why take chances?
It’s time to call these Senators like they owe you money, and demand that they stand firm on their “no” votes to Blanche. Permanently.
