In 1969, the four sixth-grade classes in my little suburban, northern Ohio school hosted about the same number of kids from an inner-city school. At the time, there were a couple of Jewish students in my class and the teacher of our particular class was Jewish, so she had taught us a little about Jewish holidays and customs (but not religion; this was a public school that believed in separation of church and state). There was also a half-Asian student. Not one black or brown student. Almost all of the inner-city kids were black. We were paired up with the kids from the other school and we did some fun things together, though I no longer remember just what. Later we went to their school, and they had a big swimming pool, so we all got to go swimming.
The whole point of this pairing up was to see the kids of another race as kids just like us and have a good time together. Our school was so white that we didn't practice racism; it just wasn't part of our environment. This was when schools were getting integrated and our teachers believed that diversity and understanding were good things.
We were in a completely different school district, in a little village with its own school system. Busing never happened to our school; our school system didn't even have buses. In high school we got a black music director in 1973. The first year, many students signed up for choir thinking it would be an easy "A". Not so. He made us work, and he made our choir so much better than it had ever been. After that, one quarter of the students were in choir because we recognized that this was a rare opportunity we might never get again. My senior year, there was a scheduling conflict between calculus and choir. So many of us honors students said that we would forego calculus so we could take choir, that they rescheduled the math class. We competed that year against really big schools and got the highest rating.
About the same time that choir director got hired, our first black family moved in. I do not know what their experience was, but I never heard one bad remark made about any one of the three students.
My conclusion about all of this is that racists were taught to be racist and they chose to continue that way. What gives me hope is that kids are not naturally racist. They are curious about differences, and curiosity is a good thing. Hate, on the other hand, uses difference as a point of attack.
Another thing that gives me hope is that there are people who are actively succeeding in changing some people's world view in such a way that they give up their racism. Daryl Davis has initiated dialogues with people in the Ku Klux Klan and got some of them to leave the Klan. He wrote about it in his 1997 book, _Klan-Destine Relationships_. He talked about some of his experiences and work in June 2025 at:
