The republican-orchestrated witch trial of Dr. Anthony Fauci and their naked attempt not just to relitigate but rewrite the 2020 pandemic is as ludicrous as it is terrifying. The same people who stripped women of our bodily autonomy are crying havoc because he said wear a mask. Science and expertise saved us when we would not save ourselves but now Rand Paul is salivating for Fauci’s head on a pike because the man wisely pleaded the fifth rather than be led to self-incrimination when these assholes (the technical term) want blood and don’t care who they get. It’s 1666 all over again and expertise is the new witchcraft. Up is down, black is white. Bad is good. It’s The reign of alternative facts. Kellyanne Conway, I blame you. We lost people to COVID because they wouldn’t vaccinate, ask families that have been wiped out because the president called sat on his ass, it a Democrat hoax, then acted like it was the flu knowing full well it wasn’t, and toyed with herd immunity and bleach and horse de-wormer. Period. But these guys want blood.
The collective denial of 2020 and the rage broke open in its wake shook all but the most cynical of us. We were told not to believe our eyes and ears and now we’re told to un-remember. ICE is literally killing people every day, but Mamdani’s call to lower your thermostat and universal childcare are really what’s sucking the lifeblood from America. We’re sending bombs to support one genocide and ignoring at least two others, while dropping bombs on fishing boats and girls schools… And this is better… right. Not to mention eggs and gas are through the roof.
And I keep coming back to the question of accountability. Stephen Miller’s wet dream of rounding up all the supposed criminal brown people taking real Americans’ jobs and benefits flies square in the face of a Dump ally apparently sneaking into Greenland to drill without permission. It’s only murder when it’s brown people on the boat apparently, and Pete Kegbreath still can’t manage to feed American troops ensconced in a illegal AND unwinnable war. Half the world is burning and the other half is eating itself alive. These dumbfucks wanted their shot, screwed it all to hell, and then looked at the smoldering ruins, smiled, and said, “See? Good enough.”
I don’t see a way forward. We have to start over and I don’t even know where to begin to undo the damage. My take is that Biden and Harris failed in my book because they refused to call the genocide what it was and and so the disaffected just sat the whole thing out and gave Dump the win. Then we watched as genuine antisemitism was weaponized to muzzle anyone who thinks killing Gaza’s babies is as bad as killing Jewish ones. Meanwhile Dump himself capitalized on basic human cynicism and selfishness. No one counted on it looking this bad though. DOGE, Flock cameras, incursions of the state and full on authoritarianism has grown a face and it is bloated and orange. We could 25th Amendment his ass (and take Miller with him) but that still leaves us with the smart version of the very same smarmy evil that is JD Vance. And none of it will bring Pop-Pop back or lower the price of eggs or make shattered immigrant families whole again. Lynching is back in vogue again and the po-po are calling it mass suicide. It’s all just so dumb. It’s no wonder the world wants to shake us off. Fire may be the only cure. I thought for so long that love wins, but I just don’t know anymore. I think I liked it better when we weren’t so great.
