Dear Stephan A. Smith: Stick to sports

A flashback to my thoughts on ESPN's loud and wrong sports analyst

Stephen A. Smith is probably a pretty good sports commentator. I’m not an ESPN viewer, and haven’t been since the Jemele Hill - Cari Champion days, so I wouldn’t know. But I do know what Stephen A. Smith is NOT well versed in: and that would be politics. He of course has every right to launch a non-ESPN podcast and talk about anything he wants. But that doesn’t make him an expert, any more than I would be credible if I, as a lifelong sports fan, launched a new show on ESPN about sports.

But don’t try to tell him that. Stephen A. Smith thinks he’s an expert on everything. Which is why he is forever the object of mockery. He’s also not too swift when it comes to the public treatment of his own community, AKA Black people, whom he seems to be all-too willing to toss under the Trump train, in exchange for financial security and MAGA favor.

I shared my thoughts on all of that on The Joy Reid Show last week, including his strong, wrong and ugly attacks on … well basically almost anybody who’s a public figure and Black, including Don Lemon, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, myself and Bakari Sellers.

Have a look, and do share your thoughts in comments.
