People often describe themselves as “lazy,” “unmotivated,” or “bad at discipline” when they delay tasks, avoid responsibilities, or struggle to begin something important. But procrastination is rarely as simple as not caring or not wanting to work.

In many cases, procrastination is not a character flaw at all. It is an emotional response.

Behind avoidance is often anxiety, overwhelm, fear of failure, perfectionism, exhaustion, or even self-protection. What looks like laziness from the outside may actually be a nervous system struggling to manage pressure on the inside.

Understanding the difference matters, because people cannot solve procrastination effectively if they are treating themselves with shame instead of insight.

True laziness implies a lack of desire to exert effort.

Procrastination is different.

Most people who procrastinate deeply care about the task they are avoiding. In fact, the more emotionally significant the task is, the more likely procrastination can appear.

A person procrastinates on:

• Writing the important paper

• Starting the business

• Applying for the job

• Responding to the difficult email

• Making the doctor’s appointment

• Cleaning the overwhelming room

These are usually not meaningless tasks. They are emotionally loaded tasks.

That emotional weight creates friction.

Procrastination Is Often Emotional Regulation

At its core, procrastination is frequently an attempt to escape discomfort.

The brain asks:

• “What if I fail?”

• “What if I disappoint people?”

• “What if I cannot do this perfectly?”

• “What if this becomes overwhelming?”

Instead of confronting those emotions directly, the mind seeks short-term relief through avoidance.

Scrolling social media.
Watching television.
Cleaning something unrelated.
Taking unnecessary naps.
Suddenly becoming interested in every task except the important one.

The relief is temporary, but it works momentarily. That is why procrastination becomes cyclical. The brain learns:
“Avoidance reduces discomfort, for now.”

Unfortunately, the avoided task usually becomes more stressful over time, increasing guilt and self-criticism.

The Role of Anxiety

Many chronic procrastinators are not careless, they are anxious.

Anxiety can make starting feel mentally dangerous, especially when:

• Expectations are high

• Outcomes feel uncertain

• Perfection feels required

• Self-worth feels attached to performance

The nervous system interprets the task not simply as work, but as threat.

This is why some people can complete ten minor tasks while still avoiding the one thing that matters most. The issue is not productivity capacity. It is emotional activation.

Perfectionism Is a Major Driver

Perfectionism and procrastination are closely connected.

People often assume perfectionists are highly organized and consistently productive. In reality, perfectionism frequently delays action because the person fears producing anything imperfect.

Thoughts may include:

• “If I cannot do it well, why start?”

• “I need more time before I begin.”

• “I should wait until I feel ready.”

Perfectionism creates impossible standards, and procrastination becomes protection from perceived inadequacy.

The irony is that avoidance often produces the very outcomes people fear most: rushed work, missed opportunities, and increased stress.

Burnout Can Look Like Procrastination

Not all procrastination is psychological avoidance. Sometimes it is depletion.

People who are emotionally exhausted, overextended, or chronically stressed may appear unmotivated when they are actually overwhelmed.

Burnout reduces:

• Mental focus

• Decision-making ability

• Energy regulation

• Executive functioning

In these situations, the issue may not be discipline, it may be recovery.

Rest is not laziness.
Mental fatigue is not failure.

A person cannot function optimally while emotionally depleted.

Shame Makes Procrastination Worse

One of the most damaging responses to procrastination is self-attack.

Statements like:

• “I’m so lazy.”

• “What is wrong with me?”

• “I never do anything right.”

These comments do not improve motivation. They often increase emotional distress, which increases avoidance.

Shame tends to paralyze rather than mobilize.

Compassionate accountability is more effective:

• “Why does this task feel difficult?”

• “What emotion am I avoiding?”

• “What would make starting feel safer or smaller?”

Understanding the barrier creates a path forward.

Here’s my take on how to work through procrastination

1. Focus on starting, not finishing

The brain often perceives the entire task as overwhelming. Reduce the demand.

Instead of:
“Write the whole report.”

Try:
“Open the document and write one paragraph.”

Action reduces anxiety more effectively than overthinking.

“Do the hard jobs first. The easy jobs will take care of themselves.” — Dale Carnegie

2. Break tasks into smaller emotional steps

Some tasks are not difficult practically, they are difficult emotionally.

Break them down:

• Open the email

• Read it

• Draft a response

• Send later if needed

Smaller steps reduce nervous system resistance.

“Action is the foundational key to all success.” — Pablo Picasso

3. Stop waiting to “feel motivated”

Motivation often follows action, not the other way around.

Many people begin after momentum starts, not before.

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” — Mark Twain

4. Challenge perfectionism

Done is often healthier than perfect.

Progress creates movement.
Perfectionism creates paralysis.

Begin while others are procrastinating. Work while others are wishing.” — William Arthur Ward

5. Address the emotional layer

Ask:

• What am I afraid of here?

• What feels emotionally risky?

• What pressure am I placing on myself?

Sometimes procrastination decreases once the underlying fear is acknowledged.

Procrastination is rarely about laziness alone.

More often, it is a collision between emotion, pressure, fear, exhaustion, and the human desire to avoid discomfort. People who procrastinate are frequently not indifferent, they are overwhelmed.

The answer is not harsher self-judgment.
The answer is understanding the emotional function of avoidance while building healthier ways to respond to stress.

Productivity is not only about discipline.
It is also about emotional safety, self-awareness, and psychological capacity.

Sometimes the most important step is not becoming more productive.
It is learning how to stop treating yourself like a failure for struggling to begin.

That’s how he describes what Bari Weiss has done to his beloved 60 Minutes, the program to which he’d given 37 years of his life — just a few years less than the time he has been married. And Pelley, who was fired last week by the Zionist crew who swallowed CBS is not keeping quiet about it. In his first sit-down interview since his firing, he unloads on Weiss, and on the Pete Hegseth of Paramount: former The Bits blogger and current filmmaker with zero newsroom management experience, Nick Bilton. Watch the interview here:

Among the troubling incidents Pelley recounts in his interview with The New York Times podcaster Lulu Garcia-Navarro about his last days and weeks at the network (including getting falsely accused of getting violent…) this one stands out:

So, the story goes through screenings. It’s very well received. There are notes as always and we do rewrites as always. But this is on a very tight deadline. It’s Sunday; we’re going on the air that night. And in the case of stories that are, as we say, crashing, our deadline on Sunday is noon. So, we work on all of these things. We get the piece approved by everyone. And about four hours after our deadline, Bari Weiss sends an email to my boss, Tanya Simon. Two of the things in the email include, can we make the protesters look more violent? Now, I’m paraphrasing. I don’t have the quote, but that’s what was communicated to me. And the other thing, Renee Good’s car. You need to describe her as driving toward the officer. [Emphasis added]

This is not what you see on the video. On the video, you see the officer standing slightly off the front of the car. And you clearly see Ms. Good’s wheels turned completely as far as they will go, away from the officer. But he shoots her in the head, kills her, and says something about her that I can’t repeat in polite company.

We have gone out of our way in our plan from the very beginning to show the protesters for the responsibility that they had. We had already scrubbed the video archives, looking for those scenes. Somehow that wasn’t enough for Ms. Weiss. The video showed that the officer wasn’t standing in front of the car and she wasn’t driving toward him, but that’s what the president said about that, and that’s the way she wanted it described.

…There was a thumb on the scale for the president’s version of events that I felt was a level of political influence that I had never seen in 37 years at CBS News.

If this was a documentary, it could be called: “Bari Weiss, and the Israelization of CBS News.”

Here’s another one:

Another high-profile “60 Minutes” host, Anderson Cooper, declined to renew his contract this year. And at the end of his final show, he went on air and said, “I hope ‘60 Minutes’ remains ‘60 Minutes.’” That was seen as a swipe at Bari Weiss. Did you talk to Anderson about why he did not renew his contact and his reasons for leaving? I did not.

How did you receive that news? Correspondents don’t resign from “60 Minutes.” It’s the greatest job in the world. There is nothing else to aspire to. So, if a person of Anderson Cooper’s stature decides that he has to leave the broadcast, that’s an indication that he has found his role there untenable.

It’s been reported that Bari Weiss was upset that Anderson Cooper’s comments had aired in that way. That’s my understanding.

Do you think that was part of the reason executive producer Tanya Simon was let go? Yes. My understanding from people directly involved in that interaction is that Bari Weiss was quite livid that Anderson Cooper was allowed to say those things and that she, Bari, was not consulted beforehand, which in our normal course of business would not have been done anyway. I believe that was part of the reason Tanya was let go. But she wasn’t let go for cause. She was let go to create a space for the new person, Nick Bilton, to come in.

Next, a very emotional Scott Pelley explains something that somehow I, even as a news and 60 Minutes junkie, somehow didn’t know…

Tanya was completely blindsided by this. She was told that she was coming into a meeting to discuss the past season and the next season. She walks in; she sits down. And Tom starts the meeting with, the nature of this meeting has changed. We’re letting you go. And told her she was fired and had to get out of her office by 5 o’clock.

Can I give you a little bit of background? The Simon family is legendary at CBS News. Her father was a famous Vietnam correspondent and then Bob Simon covered every single war, everywhere in the world throughout his entire career. I was with him in Kuwait during the Gulf War in 1990. We would stand on the roof of the hotel and watch the missiles come in. He taught me how to be a war correspondent. And then Tanya Simon comes in. She’s at the broadcast 30 years. There is no respect for that. Get out of the office by five o’clock? What company in the world treats their precious people that way? [Tears up] Tanya Simon spent her whole childhood waiting for the call that her father was dead, never knowing if she would ever see him again. Her whole childhood. Get out by 5 o’clock. Make of that what you will.

I can hear how much this has hurt you. Yes, it’s like your spouse being murdered. I don’t care about me. It’s not about me. I am not emotional about this because I have lost this job. I’ve done it for a long time. I’ve had the greatest experiences. But the people I leave behind, treated in this way? That breaks my heart, and it’s going to take me a long time to get over it.

And he caps it all by saying Bari Weiss should be removed; and doing so with the kind of shade-by-pity that only an urbane older man can deliver:

Do you think Bari Weiss needs to be removed? Oh, gosh, yes. Look, she’s a lovely person. And her Free Press organization that she founded has been very successful. But television’s not her thing. This is like somebody walking up to me and saying, “There’s a 747, there are 400 people on it, we need you to fly it to Paris.” I’m going to decline because I don’t have a clue. And it would have been so much better if Bari Weiss had been offered this job and said, “Oh, that’s not for me, I don’t know how to do that.”

Tell the truth and shame the devils, Scott.

Tell it all.

In fact, according to his attorneys, if he chose to “move fast and break things” by putting a stick of dynamite under it and bringing it down like the Twin Towers, he could do it. And no one could stop him.

And that’s their legal argument…

A federal appeals court panel expressed skepticism Friday about the Trump administration’s view that courts are powerless to stop the construction of the White House ballroom now that the East Wing had been demolished.

Two members of a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit repeatedly pressed administration lawyers about its argument that President Donald Trump’s pet project — now well underway — could not be stopped by the courts even if it was found to be illegal, because it was too far along and involved significant national security interests.

When did it become a fait accompli?” Judge Patricia Millett asked. “If this were complete lawlessness by the government … it couldn’t be stopped?”

“On these theories, I think that’s right,” replied Yaakov Roth, a Justice Department attorney.

Millett, an Obama appointee, peppered Roth with questions about the extent of the Trump administration’s view of its power to “move fast and break things” without being subject to legal challenge.

“If the government decides, very quickly, to bulldoze the Statue of Liberty — the people whose ancestors that was the first thing they saw coming to this country, but the government moved too fast — nothing can be done?” the judge asked.

“I think that’s right, yes,” Roth responded.

A federal judge in March halted construction on the ballroom during the legal battle, but the D.C. Circuit quickly paused the ruling, allowing construction to continue while the litigation is ongoing.

Just take that in. And pray that the fool in the White House doesn’t decide to rip out the great lady of New York Harbor and replace her with a giant, golden statue of himself.

Preferably awake…

Meanwhile, you know who needs more naps? The J6ers, a frighteningly large percentage of whom took their janky Trump pardon and gone on to commit more crimes including child rape. Kind of what you’d expect when you pardon a bunch of freaking criminals.

Hegseth’s D-Day message

So…. Secretary of War Crimes Pete Hegseth had some thoughts on D Day … and it was giving Camp of the Saints…

So basically … Make Europe and America White Again. Got it. Meanwhile, Nazi-style overcoat enthusiast Greg Bovino has gone full Trumpenwaffen … giving a well-received speech at a far right conference in Europe and embracing his inner Himmler:

HUO JINGNAN, BYLINE: The conference held in Portugal is called the Remigration Summit. One of the organizers is Martin Sellner, an Austrian white nationalist widely credited with popularizing the term remigration. Sellner, a former neo-Nazi, calls for expelling most people of color from Europe, including legal residents and citizens. He bills remigration as a solution for the so-called great replacement, which falsely claims that there is a deliberate effort to encourage immigration from non-white countries to dilute the identity and culture of Western countries. That conspiracy theory has inspired multiple terror attacks in the U.S. and around the world.

GREG BOVINO: Well, thank you. Thank you very much.

HUO: Bovino was a headliner at the summit. The recording of his speech was shared with NPR by the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, a nonprofit that researches transnational far-right extremist movements. In his speech, Bovino thanked Sellner for inviting him and addressed him directly.

BOVINO: Your ideas - we talked a lot on that. And again, those ideas mirror each other. It’s almost - it’s very suspicious how we’ve never talked before - face to face, that is - until yesterday, and we were on the same sheet of music almost immediately.

HUO: Bovino has echoed some of Sellner’s talking points on social media, such as emphasizing how culturally unfit some immigrants are. Bovino did not respond to an interview request, and Sellner was not available before this story’s deadline. Bovino has left the Department of Homeland Security, and the department’s new head, Markwayne Mullen, recently said he is irrelevant. However, Bovino’s endorsement of remigration still carries weight, says Heidi Beirich, co-founder of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism.

Not that he has ever been shy about who he is, or at least who he wants to be perceived to be…

And just so we’re clear on what ideology people like Hegseth — who recently ensured that only white men would be promoted to 1 Star General in the U.S. military; no women, no people of color — are pushing…

Achtung, baby.

A few notes

I’ve gotten a lot of attention for my comments on Jaxson Dart, the Giants player who gushed that he was “pleasured” to meet Donald Trump during a Trump rally. Well if I can succinctly reiterate: hush up, Jaxson Dart. Most Americans despise Donald Trump, and we always will. And chalking your praise up to the military veterans in your family actually makes it worse, since Trump is a whole draft dodger who was said by his own former chief of staff to have disparaged U.S. servicemen. Go away, now, and play foosball or something. You’re ruining the Giants.

California, New York and other states are preparing to sue to try to stop the Ellisons from devouring Warner Bros. and CNN.

Israel is still spying on us … and actually escalating their activity.

CBS is about to make it rain on Scott Pelley.

A wanted war criminal freely paraded through New York City for the annual Israel Day Parade, with a slew of elected Democrats including Chuck Schumer, Governor Kathy Hochul, a bunch of congress members, former New York mayors Eric Adams and Michael Bloomberg present, as well as Attorney General Letitia James and a cardboard cutout of current New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (like that was totally normal) who declined to attend on principle.

Of course, all that the media cared about is that Mamdani skipped it. I mean, why would he want to march beside a man who believes, like Golda Meir did from the birth of the Israeli state, that the Palestinian people don’t actually exist. Mamdani explained, as if it needed further explanation — did I mention the wanted war criminal??? … why he wasn’t there.

Curiouser and curiouser …

Had FBI veteran Frank Figliuzi not flagged it, I might have ignored right wing gadfly group Judicial Watch’s latest victory — getting the government to offload heavily redacted documents showing that a public official had some form of correspondence with the alleged attempted Butler, PA Trump assassin…

Inquiring minds want to know: why is the document so heavily redacted? If the explanation for the communication is benign, why not just come out with it? However you look at it, the Butler “assassination attempt” just looks curiouser and curiouser…
